Seven meetings, 24 selections, and a Friday card that pulls in two directions. Goodwood gives us the volume and the prices. The all-weather at Newcastle and Wolverhampton gives us the horses we are most comfortable with. Both have their place.
Start with Goodwood, because that is where the money goes. We have six down there and the stakes are heavier than usual, three points apiece on Berkshire Sundance, Indalo, Partisan Hero and Boiling Point. Berkshire Sundance at 20s and Partisan Hero at 16s are the ones that will decide whether the day reads well or badly. Into The Light is the short one of the six at odds against, and Zgharta rounds it off in the finale. It is a card that rewards patience. Nothing here needs chasing early.
If you want the steadier end of things, look to the afternoon on the sand. Reginald Charles at Newcastle is the one we keep coming back to. The horses who have beaten him lately have gone on to win since, which tells you the form has stood up rather than fallen apart. Stall five over seven furlongs is where you want to be at Newcastle, his times are sharpening, and the quick turnaround does not worry us at all.
Holly Mist in the following race is cut from similar cloth. She stands clear of this lot on our reading, and the quickest effort of her career came only last time out, which is the right way round. Varian is running at 38 percent, stall seven helps over the trip. She has been knocking on the door for a while now and this looks the day it opens.
Over at Wolverhampton, Callahan is the interesting one. Seven furlongs here suits her and her times were on the up before she went away, so the 153 day break is something we are willing to take on trust rather than treat as a red flag. Stall five is a help and Owen is going along at 35 percent. Joseph in the 4:20 is the outsider of the whole day at 28s, a small stake and no more than that.
Elsewhere, Musselburgh gives us four in the evening, Newmarket four more on the July course, and single darts at Bath and Galway. Thread Of Gold at Galway is the one Irish runner and carries two points.
Twelve of the 24 are 4/1 or shorter, twelve are bigger. That is about as even a split as we get, and it means today is less about one race carrying everything and more about the whole card doing its job. Goodwood sets the tone. The rest of it should look after itself.
