The afternoon warms us up, but Chepstow is the main event

Fifteen picks across five meetings, with our strongest opinions saved for the evening cards at Chepstow and Fairyhouse.

Fifteen picks across five meetings today, and the shape of the day is unusual. The afternoon gives us plenty to work with at Yarmouth and Catterick, but the horses we really want to be with don’t go to post until the evening.

Yarmouth is where we start swinging. Allegrino in the 2.15, Bizarre Law in the 4.15 and Zafaan in the 4.45 all carry two points win, and Zafaan at 2.75 is about as solid as we get on a Wednesday afternoon. Over at Catterick, Coconut Bay in the 2.00 catches the eye. She’s been running faster than her recent placings suggest, the clock shows steady improvement with her best effort coming last time, and she’s dropped in the weights with a nice draw in three. A quick reappearance after a solid fourth is exactly the profile we want at 4.5.

Kempton’s card is where we go fishing. Thisonesforyou at 23.0 in the 7.48 is the biggest price on our sheet, and Sonnerie Power and Union Island give us two more each-way chances under the lights.

The evening is where the conviction sits. Goodie Two Shoes in the 6.50 at Fairyhouse is our biggest bet of the day at three points win, and Contrary To Law in the 8.30 looks the strongest fit in his race on our reading, whatever a winless record suggests. Ben Coen rides from a handy draw and a first-time hood after a break could be the key. At Chepstow we have four in a row through the evening, headed by Just Typical in the 8.11. He sets a clear standard in a field of five, his rallying fourth last time carried more promise than the bare result, and both trainer and jockey know how to win at the track. Dash Of Class in the 8.46 rounds things off. She keeps running quicker with every start, her second last time is the best form in the race, and the Newland and Insole yard goes well at Chepstow.

Yesterday brought Welbury home at 4.5, with On Key filling a place from five picks. A winner at that price keeps the week ticking along nicely.

If the afternoon behaves itself, the evening double at Fairyhouse and Chepstow is where this card gets decided. We’ll know by dark whether Wednesday was a good one.
